Soup Envy

Soup Envy

I had no intention of traveling to Limelight for lunch, but whoever does their advertising earns their keep.  The promise of the perfect hernekeitto was irresistible; hence I didn’t resist and had the most delectable hernekeitto of my life.  Which if you’re wondering, hernekeitto is essentially split pea soup and theirs is the best I’ve had other than my mother’s of course.

Limelight is a planet with no original population.  A couple of geeks broke down the obstacles to creating water from atoms on a large scale using iridium, then went in search of a real-estate agent with an extrasolar iridium rich planet to sell.  They found one, bought it produced vast amounts of water, installed the strangest semipermeable membrane which served as a placeholder for the atmosphere until one developed, then they hired the PR team who placed ads in every galaxy with the slogan You Never Have to Go Home Again If You Come Here.  The response was better than they could have imagined; who knew so many were looking for a geographic cure.

The planet was assigned a designation but the International Astronomical Union being what it is and the IAU’s nomenclature being what it is the planet was soon renamed for the candoluminescence of stage lighting which was a similarly great discovery in its time.

Not surprisingly the humor of runaways has caused green to be overly popular on their new home; they have the most beautiful green dwellings, green transportation and the best hot green soup.  Try the recipe I’m sure you will be green with envy that you weren’t on Limelight having lunch with me!

1 pound of green split peas

1 medium onion chopped

2 medium carrots peeled

and finely diced

1 bay leaf

8 cups of water

Place all ingredients in a crock

pot and cook on high for 4 hours

or until the onion and carrots have

almost disappeared.

Remove the bay leaf and season

with salt and pepper.  It is nice to

add some turkey ham chopped up

after the soup is cooked. Refrigerate

for a day to allow the flavors to blend.

This recipe can be cut in half if

only serving  two people.

AC1, 2 and 3: The Quarreling Triplets

5 Dec

So, I was in this little breakfast place on AC3, the third of the Alpha Centauri planets.  It’s funny, these three planets spent their formative years waging a rock, paper, scissors style hostility at one another; when that finally was given up as bad form they have focused on, breakfast for supper as a way to solve the problem of having half a year when there is no real night. It is too light to go to bed, everyone gets cranky and all they want to do is fight, now they focus on pancakes and marmalade, well, I think of it as pancakes and marmalade, they call them galetes and difondre, the pancakes are more like big not too sweet cookies and the marmalade is slimmer and a bit nubbly, but sublimely good.  The trick to these breakfast spots is that the chairs recline so when you finish your meal you stretch back, a leg support pops up and when the busman comes to clear your dishes he covers you with a little blanket and there you have; it no sleepless night, no having to jet back home, no miserable maelstrom of grownups feeling and acting like toddlers.  In short you have nap time.  If you wake up too soon you are still right there and can order another galete with difondre with a pot of tea, or possibly some hot chocolate and back to dreams you go.  I wish that all intergalactic conflict was so simply solved, a place for everyone to lay their heads or have a little nibble, no need for misery, no need for war.

Introductions and the addressing of absurdity:

5 Dec

As my fellow travelers, I’m sure are aware, Alpha Centauri is a binary star system, since each star has a relative temperature of over 5,000 Kelvin, there is no tap water.  As my friends know, my dislike of domestic travel makes my traveling intergalactically as likely as Alpha Centauri’s tap water, but there’s no sense in letting these little realities hold us back from a good time, So please join me as I hop from theoretical planet to oddly inhabited post and sample the local cuisine.  I assure you the recipes will be faithfully translated to terrestrial ingredients wherever possible and where impossible we’ll just wing it!
